In 1606 King James I, granted a charter for landowners.thenn he set out to make a settlement on Chesapeake Bay. By December 104 sailors had gone to Chesapeake Bay. They went to look for gold and seek a water route to Orient. Most men were known as "gentlemen". Everyone put in effort to make the colony succeed.

It also reveals the foresight of Thomas Jefferson, who considered the purchase as one of his greatest achievement in his life time.

 They arrived in May of 1607. They landed on Jamestown Island, 60 miles from Chesapeake Bay. They settled there because it was hidden from Spanish ships. But they didnt expect to be under attack by the Algonquien Indians. They built a wooden fort around their little town to block off the indian attacks. Disease and continuous attacks took tole on the population.
